Running a Thermal Clip-On Ahead of Your Day Scope: Setup & Sizing

A thermal clip-on turns the day scope you already trust into a night rig — if you fit it right. How clip-ons work, sizing the TAURUS adaptor to your objective, and checking point of impact.

Running a Thermal Clip-On Ahead of Your Day Scope: Setup & Sizing

Pixfra Australia Field Journal · How-To

A thermal clip-on is a clever bit of kit: instead of buying a dedicated thermal sight, you mount a thermal module in front of the day scope you already own and shoot through both. Keep your glass, keep your zero, add night capability. It works beautifully — if you size and fit it properly. Get the adaptor wrong and it sits crooked or won’t clamp; get the setup right and it’s the most flexible way to shoot around the clock.

Quick verdict

Match the adaptor to your scope’s objective, fit it square, and confirm point of impact on paper. A clip-on mounts ahead of your day scope and needs a clamp sized to your objective bell — the TAURUS adaptor covers roughly 45–65 mm, which fits most hunting scopes. Fit it concentric and tight, keep the day scope on a low magnification, and check for any point-of-impact shift before you rely on it. Your underlying day zero stays untouched.

How a clip-on actually works

A clip-on has no reticle of its own. It’s a thermal front end: it captures the heat scene and presents it to your day scope, which does the aiming exactly as it does in daylight. You look through your normal scope, at your normal reticle, but the picture is now thermal. Because the clip-on sits in front and doesn’t touch your scope’s internals, your daytime zero is preserved — take the clip-on off and the rifle is back to a standard day setup instantly. That’s the appeal over a dedicated night scope, and the trade-off against it is covered in Volans vs a day scope + clip-on.

Sizing the adaptor to your objective

This is the step people get wrong. The clip-on attaches to the front of your scope via a clamp-style adaptor that must match your objective bell diameter — not the tube, the front lens housing. Measure your objective’s outer diameter and pick the adaptor to suit; the TAURUS adaptor is made to span roughly 45–65 mm, which covers the great majority of hunting day scopes. A correctly sized adaptor clamps concentric (the thermal module sits dead in line with your optical axis) and holds firm under recoil. Too large and it won’t grip; too small and it won’t seat.

In plain terms: measure the front lens housing of your day scope, then size the adaptor to it. Concentric and tight is the goal.

Fitting it right

StepWhat to do
1. MeasureObjective bell outer diameter → choose adaptor (TAURUS 45–65 mm)
2. Mount squareSeat the clip-on concentric to the optical axis; no cant
3. Clamp firmTighten so it won’t move under recoil, without crushing the bell
4. Set magnificationRun the day scope at a low, clip-on-friendly power
5. Check POIConfirm point of impact on paper before you hunt

Check point of impact — every time

A quality clip-on is designed for minimal point-of-impact shift, but “minimal” isn’t “none”. Any device placed in the optical path can nudge where the rifle prints, so treat a newly fitted clip-on like a change to the rifle: confirm it on paper at your zero distance before you trust it on an animal. If there’s a small, consistent shift, note it and hold for it, or re-check your setup. You’re not re-zeroing the day scope — that stays as it is — you’re verifying the clip-on introduces no surprise. The general zeroing principles carry over from how to zero a thermal.

Keep it running well

A clip-on lives out front, exposed, so keep the germanium lens clean and protected between sessions — the same care that applies to any thermal, covered in looking after your thermal. Store it so the adaptor threads and clamp stay clean, and check the clamp tension periodically, especially after rough travel. Fitted and maintained properly, a clip-on gives a trusted day rifle a genuine second life after dark.

Frequently asked questions

How does a thermal clip-on work?

It mounts in front of your day scope and feeds it a thermal image, so you aim through your normal scope and reticle but see heat instead of light. It has no reticle of its own and doesn’t touch your scope’s internals, so your daytime zero is preserved.

What size adaptor do I need for a thermal clip-on?

One matched to your scope’s objective bell diameter — measure the outer diameter of the front lens housing. The TAURUS adaptor covers roughly 45–65 mm, which fits most hunting day scopes. A correctly sized adaptor clamps concentric and holds firm under recoil.

Does a clip-on change my rifle’s zero?

Your underlying day-scope zero stays intact because the clip-on sits in front and doesn’t alter the scope. A good clip-on is designed for minimal point-of-impact shift, but you should still confirm it on paper when you fit it, as any device in the optical path can nudge point of impact slightly.

What magnification should I run with a clip-on?

A lower power generally works best with a clip-on, keeping the thermal image clean across the field of view. Very high magnification can exaggerate the thermal image’s pixel structure. Check your clip-on’s guidance and your own eye for the sweet spot.

Is a clip-on better than a dedicated thermal scope?

It’s more flexible if you want to keep an existing day scope and zero, and switch to night capability on the same rifle. A dedicated thermal scope generally out-performs a clip-on for pure, frequent night work. It comes down to whether you want one do-it-all rifle or the best dedicated night setup.
