Getting Started

What's in the box?

Your Volans ships with the day/night optic, a rechargeable battery, a USB-C cable, a lens cloth, a sunshade and a quick-start guide. The complete kit configurations also include the Accura Torch Kit (IR torch) and an Accura QD mount for a ready-to-hunt rig out of the box.

V850 or V850LRF — which do I have?

They're the same optic — same 4K sensor, 50 mm lens, circular display and adjustable aperture. The V850LRF simply adds an integrated 1,000 m laser rangefinder and onboard ballistic calculator, so you can range a target and get a firing solution. That accounts for a small difference in height and weight.

850 nm or 940 nm — which IR torch?

Choose 850 nm for the most range and the brightest night image, with a very faint red glow visible at the torch. Choose 940 nm for fully covert operation with no visible glow — best on pressured, skittish game — at a slight cost to outright range. The kit configurations include an IR torch so you're ready for the dark out of the box.

Charging the Volans

Charge the Volans over the supplied USB-C cable. Start any firmware update or a long night from a full charge, and carry power for extended sessions. Keep the battery in a sensible temperature range while charging.

Turning it on and the controls

Power up from the power button and use the menu controls for the brief menu (the settings you change often) and the main menu (setup and system). The button map for your model is on the unit and in your quick-start guide.

Mounting & Zeroing

Mounting the Volans

The Volans has a full metal body with a 1,000 g / 0.4 ms recoil rating that shrugs off heavy-calibre rifles and shotguns. Mount it on your rail (the complete kit includes an Accura QD mount), seat it square and tighten evenly so it holds zero under recoil.

Zeroing your Volans

Zero from the Volans' Zeroing menu: set your distance, fire a shot, and walk the reticle onto your point of impact, then save. Confirm on paper at your working distance. Because it's a day-usable optic, you can do your zeroing work in daylight.

Using it day & night

The adjustable aperture (F1.2–F3.0)

The Volans has a real mechanical iris — a physical aperture you set from F1.2 to F3.0 — that controls how much light reaches the 4K sensor. Open it to F1.2 in the dark for the brightest night image; close toward F3.0 in harsh daylight to cut glare and sharpen contrast. Most digital optics have a fixed aperture and leave the software to fight the conditions — the Volans hands that control to you.

Using it in daylight

By day the Volans works like a normal scope, only smarter: a crisp, full-colour 4K image with digital zoom and recording. Wind the aperture toward F3.0 to tame glare on a bright day, fit the sunshade, and it's your everyday daytime scope as much as your night one.

Seeing in the dark and the IR torch

In low light the Volans switches to night mode and amplifies the available light — moonlight, starlight, distant glow. On a truly black night, fit an IR torch (an infrared illuminator that floods the scene with light your eyes can't see but the sensor can). Open the aperture to F1.2 to gather every scrap of light — it reaches well past 400 m with the torch fitted.

The true circular display

Most digital optics show a rectangular widescreen image — you're looking down a tube at a TV screen. The Volans uses a 1.25″ 800×800 panel to render a genuine round sight picture, a true 31 mm circular view, exactly like a conventional rifle scope. Your eye settles into round optics faster, so it's quicker to get behind and easier to hold for long sessions.

Rangefinder & Ballistics (V850LRF)

Using the rangefinder and ballistics (V850LRF)

Only the V850LRF has the rangefinder and ballistics. Range a target with the integrated 1,000 m laser rangefinder, and the onboard ballistic calculator gives you a firing solution once you've set up your load. If the LRF won't return a reading, it's almost always the target or the conditions — see the shared article Why won't my LRF measure distance?

Recording, App, Care & Troubleshooting

Recording and the app

The Volans records video and stills to 64 GB of onboard storage, and built-in Wi-Fi links to the Pixfra Outdoor app for live phone mirroring, playback and settings. Enable Wi-Fi, join the hotspot from your phone, then add the device in the app.

Getting footage off

Connect to a computer over USB-C, enable USB storage mode, and copy your stills and video off the drive. You can also review and transfer over the app.

Updating firmware

Update over the Pixfra Outdoor app when prompted, or over USB-C by copying the firmware file across in USB storage mode and restarting. Start from a full charge and don't interrupt an update.

Cleaning and waterproofing

The Volans has a full metal body sealed to IP67, so rain and dust are no problem. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth, or one barely dampened with a mild neutral detergent — never alcohol, benzene, thinners or abrasives, and keep your hands off the front lens.

Factory reset

A factory reset in the system menu returns the optic to default settings — you'll re-set your preferences and re-check your zero afterward, so only use it if a restart hasn't fixed odd behaviour.
